Diophantus, griech. Mathematiker aus dem 4. Jahrh. nach Chr., der einzige, der über Algebra schrieb, welche den Griechen älterer Zeit so gut wie unbekannt war. Die Araber übersetzten und benützten sein Werk; uns sind von seinen 13 Büchern über Arithmetik nur 6 erhalten (deutsch von Schulz, Berlin 1821), sowie sein Werk über die Polygonalzahlen (deutsch von Poselger, Leipzig 1810).
