Giotto

Giotto (Dschotto), eigentl. Ambrogiotto Burdone, einer der ausgezeichnetsten älteren italien. Maler, Schüler Cimabues, zugleich Baumeister u. Bildhauer, geb. 1270 zu Vespignano im Florentinischen, Wiederhersteller der Kunst, indem er dieselbe von der Härte und Unbeweglichkeit der damals herrschenden byzantin. Schule befreite, und durch Nachahmung der Natur Bewegung, Leben u. schönere Formen in seine Darstellungen brachte. Er malte besonders in Rom, Neapel, später in Frankreich, wohin er Papst Clemens V. folgte und st. 1336 zu Florenz.
