Mably, Gabr. Bonnot de, geb. 1709 zu Grenoble, der ältere Bruder des Condillac (s.d.), studierte bei den Jesuiten in Lyon, trat in den geistlichen Stand, st. 1785 zu Paris. M. schrieb geistreiche Schriften historischen u. politischen Inhalts (Vergleichung der alten Römer und Franzosen, das öffentliche Recht in Europa, Bemerkungen über die Römer u. Griechen, über Geschichtschreibung), dazu über Moral, um darzuthun, daß Sittlichkeit u. Klugheit stets zusammen gehen könnten, endlich auch über den Zusammenhang der Moral mit der Politik, eine Schrift, welche ihm den Beinamen des Abbé Phocion verschaffte.
