Municipal, auf Städte und deren Verwaltung bezüglich. z.B. M.rath, M.verfassung; M. ität, die Gemeinde, gewöhnlich der Gemeinderath. Municipien, bei den alten Römern Städte mit röm. Bürgerrechte, durch die von den Bürgern gewählten Obrigkeiten regiert, nicht von einem Statthalter, entweder mit eigenem od. dem röm. Rechte; in letzterem Falle konnten sie alle röm. Aemter, im andern nur die militärischen begleiten. Die M. freiheit erhielt sich bei den ital. Städten über den Untergang des weström. Reichs u. wurde die Grundlage der mittelalterlichen Städtefreiheit in Italien.
