Projection, die geometrischen Beziehungen beliebiger Punkte, Linien und Flächen im Raume zu 1, 2 oder 3 sich gegenseitig schneidenden gegebenen Ebenen. Erstere sind die projicirenden Punkte etc., letzteres die P. s- od. Coordinatenebenen. Ausgedehnteste Anwendung der P.slehre in der beschreibenden Geometrie u. in der Cartographie. Die vorzüglichsten P. sarten für Landkarten sind 1) die ortographische P. Auf die Berührungsebene eines Punktes des aufzunehmenden Erdtheils oder Landes werden von allen übrigen Punkten Perpendikel auf die Berührungsebene (P. s ebene) gefällt. 2) Die stereographische P. Man denkt sich das Auge gerade gegenüber dem zu entwerfenden Lande, die P. sebene aber als größten Kreis, auf den die einzelnen Punkte ihre Perpendikel projiciren. 3) Die Kegel- P. Die P. sebene ist eine berührende Kegelfläche, die sich auf einer Ebene entwickelnd gedacht wird. Für Seekarten ist die sogen. P. Mercators die gewöhnliche, dabei schneiden sich Parallelkreise und Meridiane mit rechten Winkeln.
