Turbine

Turbine oder Kreiselrad, eine neuere Art Wasserrad oder Motor für die Wasserkraft, bestehend aus einem trommelartigen, an einer vertikalen Welle befestigten Kasten, der innen Zellen hat, in welche das Wasser tritt und durch seinen Druck den Kasten und mit ihm die Welle in drehende Bewegung versetzt. An einer andern Stelle tritt das Wasser wieder heraus. Die T.n haben vor den gewöhnlichen Wasserrädern den Vorzug, daß sie weniger Raum bedürfen, schneller sich bewegen u. die gebotene Wasserkraft vollständiger benutzen. Erfinder der T. ist Tourneyron in Besançon.
