Vinland d.h. Weinland, nannten die Normannen das Küstenland von Massachusetts u. Rhode-Island, von den wildwachsenden Trauben (den sog. Fuchstrauben); 986 entdeckte es Bjarne Herjulfson, um 1000 besuchte es Leif der Glückliche, 1007 siedelte sich der Isländer Thorfinn Karlsefne an; die normann. Kolonien sind bekanntlich später spurlos verschwunden. (Vergl. Rafn »Antiquitates Americanae« Kopenhag. 1837.)
