Woolston (Ulst'n), Thomas, gleich Toland, Collins, Shaftesbury u.a. einer der Freidenker, an denen England im 17. und 18. Jahrh. überreich war, geb. 1669 zu Northampton, wurde Mitglied des Sidneycollegs in Cambridge und Baccalaureus der Theologie. Er rannte sich in der fixen Idee fest, die gesammte Geschichte des A. u. N. T. sei pure Allegorie und erwarb sich besonders als Bekämpfer der Wunder Christi einen Namen. Lange Jahre ließ man ihn ungeschoren, allein er trat dem anglikanischen Klerus immer höhnender entgegen, seine Schriften gingen reißend ab und so brauchte man endlich Ernst; 1721 wurde er vom Sidneycolleg ausgeschlossen, 1728 wegen Gottlosigkeit u. Lästerung der Wunder Christi in Anklagestand versetzt u. 1729 in eine Geldstrafe verfällt. Weil er nicht bezahlen konnte, starb er im Jan. 1733 im Gefängniß. Ein frivoler Verächter der Religion war übrigens W. nicht und seine ärgsten Gegner geben zu, er sei ein gutmüthiger und in seinem äußern Lebenswandel untadeliger Mann gewesen.
