Boswell (Baßwell), James, geb. 1740 zu Edinburg, Freund Samuel Johnsons, bereiste 1764 Deutschland, die Schweiz und Italien, schrieb nach seiner Rückkehr »Account of Corsica with memoires of general Pasquale di Paoli«, später die Schilderung einer Reise nach den Hebriden in »Journal of a tour to the Hebrides with Johnson« deutsch 1785, und nach seines Freundes Tod »Life of S. Johnson« 1791, welches in England als Meisterwerk gilt. Er st. 1795. – B., Sir Alexander, Sohn des Vorigen, geb. 1775, schrieb schottische Lieder im Volkston, ausgezeichnet durch Humor, und gesammelt in den »Songs, chiefty in the scottish dialect« 1803. Er ward 1821 Baronet und starb in Folge einer Wunde, die er in einem Duell erhalten, 1822.
