Chrysoloras

Chrysoloras, Manuel, vornehmer Grieche aus Constantinopel, kam 1391 als Gesandter des Kaisers Johannes Paläologus nach Italien, um das Abendland zur Hilfe gegen die Türken zu bewegen. Hierin errang er bekanntlich keinen Erfolg, lehrte aber in Florenz, Mailand, Pavia, zuletzt in Rom, altgriech. Sprache u. Literatur u. wirkte dadurch wesentlich mit zur Wiederaufnahme der classischen Studien im Abendlande. Er st. 1415 als Begleiter des Papstes auf das Concil zu Constanz u. wurde in der Dominikanerkirche begraben. Er schrieb außer theolog. Schriften »Erotemata«, ein Lehrbuch der Anfangsgründe der griech. Sprache. Minder bedeutend ist sein mit ihm oft verwechselter Neffe Johannes C.
