Colosseum Colisseum

Colosseum Colisseum das von Vespasian begonnene und von Titus vollendete große Amphitheater, das 80000 Menschen fassen konnte und theilweise noch steht. Der Umfang des Gebäudes beträgt 1683, die Höhe 183' in 4 Stockwerken, von denen das oberste eine von Fenstern durchbrochene Mauer mit dem Kranzgesimse bildete. Die Decke war eine Terasse, auf welcher Tücher zum Schutze der Zuschauer gegen die Sonnenstrahlen ausgespannt wurden. Das Gebäude hatte 4 Prachteingänge, vor denen eherne Viergespanne aufgestellt waren. Die einbrechenden Barbaren, Gothen, Vandalen etc. mögen viel verdorben haben, zerstörend wurde es später durch die Bauten römischer Großen, namentlich der Barberini, angegriffen.
