Cooper (Kuhpʼr), Astley Paston, Sir, einer der ausgezeichnetsten Chirurgen der neuesten Zeit, geb. 1768 zu Brooke in Norfolk, erhielt seine Ausbildung in London am Guys Hospital, wo sein Oheim Sam. C. Wundarzt war, auf der Universität Edinburg, wurde Prosector und Hilfslehrer der Anatomie und Chirurgie am St. Thomashospital in London, später am Guys Hospital und Lehrer an der neuen chirurg. Schule der vereinten Spitäler. 1792 begann er seine Praxis in London, wurde Leibwundarzt des Königs Georg IV., 1821 Baronet, 1837 Leibarzt der Königin Victoria, st. 1841. C. glänzte nicht bloß als Praktiker durch die Kühnheit und Eigenthümlichkeit seiner Operationen, sondern auch als Lehrer und chirurgischer Schriftsteller. Von seinen Schriften sind besonders zu erwähnen: »The anatomy and surgical treatement of inguinal and congenital hernia« London 1804; »Of abdominal Hernia« 2. Aufl. 1827; »A treatise on dislocations and fractures of the joints« 7. Aufl. 1831; »The lectures on the principles and practice of surgery« 2 Bde. 1837, deutsch von Schütte, Kassel 1837–38.
