Ellenborough (Ellenböro), Edward Law, Baron, geb. 1750, berühmter Jurist, vertheidigte 1785 Warren Hastings gegen E. Burke, wurde 1801 Generalfiscal, 1802 Peer, gehörte zu den Hochtorys, st. 1818. Sein Sohn Edward E., Graf, geb. 1790, Tory, war von 1828–30 Präsident des indischen Bureaus, 1834 Mitglied des Ministeriums Peel, 1841–44 Generalgouverneur von Ostindien, unternahm den Rachekrieg gegen die Afghanen, unterwarf die Emire am untern Indus, die Mahratten in Gwalior, begünstigte systematisch die Hindu gegen die Mohammedaner, wurde aber von dem Directorium der ostind. Compagnie heimberufen; seitdem ist er im Oberhaus ein thätiger toryst. Opponent.
