Monk

Monk, George, Herzog von Albemarle, geb. 1608 in Devonshire, einer verarmten adeligen Familie angehörig, diente zuerst dem Könige Karl I., seit 1641 dem Parlamente, wurde von Cromwell zum Generallieutenant und Commandeur der Artillerie, 1653 zum Oberadmiral erhoben, als welcher er den holländ. Seehelden Tromp vollständig schlug. Als Richard Cromwell die Macht seines Vaters nicht behaupten konnte u. sich ein neuer Bürgerkrieg zu entzünden drohte, führte M. aus Schottland, wo er Gouverneur war, sein Heer nach London, löste das Parlament auf, ließ ein neues wählen und proclamirte am 8. Mai 1660 Karl II. als König. Dieser erhob ihn zum Herzog von Albemarle u. Gouverneur von Devonshire u. Middlesex, ohne ihm jedoch großen Einfluß zu gewähren; 1666 commandirte M. unter dem Herzoge von York die en gl. Flotte in der großen Schlacht bei Northforeland gegen Ruyter u. siegte glänzend; er st. 3. Juni 1670. Seine oft (auch von Dahlmann) getadelte Einleitung der Restauration Karls II. hat Macaulay in seinem bekannten Geschichtswerke und Guizot in einer eigenen Monographie anders gewürdigt.
