Abraham

Abraham, (Völkervater) Sohn Tarachs zu Ur in Chaldäa, 10. Nachkomme Sems, wanderte mit Vater, Bruder und Familie nach Haran, als in seiner Heimat die Abgötterei einriß, und später nach Palästina und Aegypten. Er erhielt in Haran von Gott die Verheißung, daß sein Geschlecht zu einem Volke heranwachsen werde und durch dasselbe alle Völker der Erde gesegnet werden sollen. Er wandelte im Glauben an den Herrn und im Gehorsam gegen denselben und wie er in jeder Prüfung sich bewährte, erneuerte der Herr jedesmal die Verheißungen. Er segnete ihn auch mit Wohlstand, gab ihm Sieg über die Feinde und Gunst bei den fremden Stämmen. Abraham ist durch Friedfertigkeit, Gastlichkeit, biederen Sinn und Heldenmuth das Musterbild eines Hirtenfürsten, durch seinen Glauben aber das Vorbild des Christen. Er starb 175 Jahre alt und wurde neben Sarah in der Höhle bei Mambre am Hebron begraben. Durch Isaak wurde Abraham Stammvater der Israeliten, durch Ismael der arabischen Stämme. Die Söhne seines letzten Weibes, der Kethurah, vermischten sich mit andern Stämmen.
