Bourbon (Burbong), Isle de B., franz. Insel im Osten von Afrika, die südlichste der Maskarenen, während der Revolution Réunion, unter dem Kaiserreich Napoleon genannt, hat eine Länge von 8 und eine Breite von 6 M., mit etwas über 100000 E., zu zwei Dritttheilen Neger. die seit 1848 freigegeben sind. Die Insel ist vulkanischen Ursprungs; ein mächtiger Gebirgszug durchzieht sie der Länge nach, mit bedeutenden Erhebungen. Der höchste Punkt ist der in der Mitte der Gebirgskette gelegene 9500' hohe Piton de Neige; andere sind der Gros-Morne, ein erloschener Vulkan, 7200', der Grand-Bénard 8900' der noch immer thätige 7500' hohe Volkan oder Piton-de-Fournaise, einer der mächtigsten Vulkane. Das Klima ist gemäßigt und mild, der Boden sehr fruchtbar und gut bebaut. Ausfuhrgegenstände: Getreide, Kasse, Baumwolle, Indigo, Gewürze, Cacao, Gummi, Kampher. Die Hauptstadt der Insel u. Sitz des Gouverneurs ist St. Denis. – B. wurde 1502 von den Portugiesen entdeckt, von den Franzosen 1649 in Besitz genommen, 1811 von den Engländern besetzt, aber 1814 wieder zurückgegeben.
