Bradley (Bräddli), James, nach Bessels Urtheile der größte Astronom des vorigen Jahrhdts., wurde 1692 zu Sherborne in England geboren. Er gab die Theologie u. seine Pfarrei auf, um sich ganz der Astronomie zu widmen. Ein Oheim, selber Astronom, unterstützte ihn, und schon 1721 ward er Professor der Sternkunde in Oxford, wo er die Aberration des Lichts (s. d. A.) entdeckte. 1741 wurde er königlicher Astronom zu Greenwich und starb als solcher 1762. Er hinterließ handschriftlich 13 Foliobde. seiner Beobachtungen, die unschätzbaren Früchte seines großen und beharrlichen Geistes, die erst durch Bessel recht ans Licht gezogen und benützt wurden.
